  1. I

    Arrive and order

The ticket gets you into the show. Tapas and drinks can be ordered at the venue, and the one rule that matters is to order before the performance begins: no orders are taken once it has started.

  2. II

    The opening scene

The dancers begin alone, with a short scene staged before anyone else joins them.

  3. III

    The cante

Then the singer and the guitarist come on and the evening gains its voice. Flamenco keeps its rhythm in a cycle called the compás, marked by the guitar and by handclaps, and the sung verses ride on top of it.

  4. IV

    The guitar solo

The guitarist steps forward for a solo. In flamenco, the instrumental passages that punctuate the sung verses are known as falsetas.

  5. V

    Each dancer’s solo

Every dancer then gets a solo piece, and the feelings they carry run from joy to pain to melancholy. Flamenco dance is known for its upright carriage, expressive arms and rhythmic stamping.

  6. VI

    After the last bars

Guests write about goosebumps and about how close and personal the room felt. By then you have heard every voice in the cast.

Flamenco, as Málaga tells it

Flamenco, as Málaga tells it

A port city with a very long memory

Málaga sits on the Costa del Sol and was founded about 770 BC by Phoenicians from Tyre, who named it Malake. A Roman theatre, an eleventh-century Alcazaba and a Renaissance cathedral stand close together in the old centre, so an evening of flamenco here has a lot of city behind it.

An art form of song, guitar and dance

Flamenco grew up in southern Spain, partly within the gitano community of Andalusia, and joins singing, guitar, dance and handclaps into one performance. The oldest written record of flamenco music dates to 1774, and on 16 November 2010 UNESCO named flamenco a masterpiece of humanity’s oral and intangible heritage.

Songs that started near Málaga

The Málaga area has its own corner of the repertoire. Malagueñas grew out of local fandangos and became a flamenco style in the nineteenth century; they are sung freely and are not normally danced. Verdiales, among the oldest surviving Málaga fandangos, are still played in the hills by large local groups called pandas.

Why a flamenco room is called a tablao

The word comes from tablado, the wooden floor a dancer stamps on. Rooms built around that platform spread across Spain in the 1960s, taking over from the cafés cantantes of the nineteenth century, and most of them serve drinks and tapas to the audience while the cast performs.

Finding the theatre

Head for Calle Vélez Málaga 6, in the La Malagueta quarter. Start times for your date appear on the booking page, and the theatre is a few steps from Muelle Uno.

Your ticket

The ticket is a mobile one: it reaches your phone the moment you book, with no printing, and you show the screen when you arrive.

Order before it starts

If you want tapas or a drink, order them while you take your seat. Once the performance begins, the waiters take no more orders.

Choosing a good seat

Guests who mention seating say tables follow the order in which tickets were bought, and that rows beyond the front have a harder view of the footwork. Reserve early if you want to sit near the stage.

In the room

Keep your phone flash and torch off, and leave smoking for outside. Announcements and introductions are made in Spanish and English, and the performance itself is mostly visual.

Children and dress

The restaurant ticket is not suited to children under 8, although the venue welcomes all ages on the evening. Casual clothes are fine; semi-formal is recommended with dinner.

FAQ

Questions before you book your seat

How long is the show, and when does it start?

The performance itself runs about an hour on the restaurant and premium tickets, and the whole evening takes between one and two and a half hours depending on the ticket. Starting times for your date appear when you check availability, so choose your slot there.

Are tapas and drinks part of the show ticket?

No, the show ticket is for admission. You can order tapas and drinks at the venue, as long as you order before the performance begins, because nothing is served to order once it has started. The restaurant ticket adds a dinner before the show.

Who performs?

The whole cast takes part: dancers, a singer and a guitarist. The dancers start with a short scene, the singer and guitarist join, there is a guitar solo and then each dancer performs a solo piece. Guests mention both a male and a female dancer.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Yes, up to 24 hours before the start, and the full amount comes back. You can also hold a seat today and pay later, which helps while the rest of your trip is still moving.

Is it suitable for children?

All ages are welcome on the evening, although the setting suits children from 8, and the restaurant ticket is not suited to children under 8. The performance is mostly visual, with announcements in Spanish and English.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

The show ticket and the restaurant ticket are both marked wheelchair accessible, and the restaurant ticket lists accessible facilities for guests with reduced mobility. The premium ticket’s hotel transfer is not wheelchair accessible.

Is the dinner worth adding?

Guests on the restaurant ticket praise the service and the tapas, and a few say the dinner is good rather than special, so the show is the reason to book. Choose it if you want one table and a fixed order for the night, with menu options including dietary ones.

Does it feel like a show for tourists?

Guests describe passionate performers and an intimate setting, and some say it felt like more than a show for visitors. A few mention that the best views are near the front, which is a good reason to book early.
